Nags Head Hotel, Adamstown

Nags Head Hotel, Adamstown, NSW

Date: 2nd March, 2012
Price: $18-ish
Type: chicken
With: cheese, avocado and ham; and cheese, ham and pineapple...with mash or with salad and chips.

A delightful family meal down at the local pub meant that there were multiple schnitzels eaten. The Nags Head has quite a variety of schnitzel toppings; some more questionable than others. For instance.... schnitzel with pineapple? NO! (Although, you must note that i'm one of those people who will not go anywhere near a hot piece of pineapple). There was a lot of potential here, but i was not sold on this schitzel. The cheese, ham and avocado were all worthy accompaniments, but the schnitzel itself was lacking something. It just didn't taste as good as it should have. The mash was also a bit iffy. So overall... not a huge fan. However, the older people in my party thought it was brilliant..... but what do they know?

Town Hall Hotel, Newtown

Town Hall Hotel, Newtown, Sydney

Date: 16th February 2012
Type: Pork
Price: $18-ish
With: chips and salad and mushroom sauce

The townie has had it's schnitzel offerings reviewed multiple times, but not once has their been a schnitzel of the pork variety on offer. As it was a special that particular night, it probably wont be there ever again, but i'm sure we'll all live.

It had been quite some time since i'd eaten at the Townie, but regardless this schnitzel was impressive. The schnitzel wasn't huge, but it was obviously made in the kitchen rather than pre-made and frozen. It was very tasty indeed and the mushroom sauce was brilliant. Salad is salad really, but you have to love a salad with grated carrot...... well... i do.

South Sydney Graphic Arts Club, Mascot

South Sydney Graphic Arts Club, Mascot

Date: 15th February, 2012
Price: $19.90
Type: chicken
With: potatoes, salad and mushroom sauce

So you walk into a club in Mascot (a predominant sea of industry and high-rise apartments) that for some reason claims to be affiliated with the graphic arts industry there's instant confusion. The decor is fancy, the clientele is less than fancy. The bistro also appears fancy with the table service, fancy cushions and dangly light fittings, and "fancy" prices, so there's a lot to expect.

For $19.90 I was expecting something slightly more fancy, but as the schnitzel was cooked perfectly (look at it; it's like a beautiful sunset) i really couldn't complain. The mushroom sauce was very tasty and the potatoes were nice and crunchy. The perfect anti-shoestring-fried.

Would i go back? Well, only if i was in Mascot for some other reason. Ten pin bowling anyone?

Prince Albert Hotel

Prince Albert Hotel, Adelaide
Date: 27th January 2012
Price:$16
Type: Chicken
With: salad, mushroom sauce and "shoestring fries"

I was expecting quite a lot from my second ever schnitzel in Adelaide. This schnitzel did live up to expectations, so you can stop worrying. I was considering ordering something else, solely based on the fact that it came with "shoestring fries"; the worst type of chip in existence...... but most of the other meals came with the same type of chip, so i really wasn't going to win either way.

The schnitzel itself was good, not a the pre-shaped-then-frozen variety pubs usually sell. As for the size.... who cares when it's a decent piece of meat? Not I! The sauce was tasty, with whole mushrooms and the salad.... well, it was a salad. All in all, thumbs up Prince Albert Hotel.

And one more thing..... a "pint" in Adelaide is the same as a "schooner" in Sydney? Laugh! Someone really needs to standardise beer glass sizes to end the confusion of the weary traveller. That is all.

The Royal George

The Royal George, Sydney
Date: January 7th, 2012
Type: Chicken
Price: $17
With: chips and salad (no mash available - boooooo)

A nice break from the craziness that was the Sydney Festival First Night in a pub that was quite empty. The Royal George is on that section of George St in the city that's generally best avoided, mainly due to the high concentration of nauseating and scantily clad females accompanied by polo-shirted beefed-up guys. Wank.

Anyway, so the food at the Royal George was surprisingly good. The beer selection was also good. The schnitzel? Well, it was better than your standard low-quality pub schnitzel; cooked well and presented nicely, but nothing nothing to make it stand out amongst it's competitors. The chips were very tasty indeed. All in all, not too bad for $17, but you could probably do better elsewhere.

The AB Hotel, Glebe, Sydney
Date: 26th December 2011
Price: $14 (an extra $2.80 for the blob of sauce and pre-cut cheese)
Type: Chicken
With: chips, lettuce and tomato sauce

Could it have been because the normal chef was not working on Boxing Day? I'm not sure, but this was a fairly ordinary meal.

The words "this was definitely a frozen schnitzel at some point" were heard. Very small and it's not clear how a single blob of sauce and cheese turned this schnitzel into a parmigiana, but that's what it's meant to be. Additionally, the salad left quite a lot to be desired.

Shame on you, AB hotel; your website boasts so many bold bold claims, I thought you were better than that.

The Carlisle Castle, Newtown

The Carlisle Castle, Newtown, Sydney
Date: 29th November 2011
Price: dunno (over $15, that's all i know)
Type: veal
With: mash and some sort of sauce

All the times I've been to, and eaten at the Carlisle, and I've never had a schnitzel. Crazy! This time again it was not i that got to eat this specimen. I must say it looked pretty good (and by all reports, tasted pretty good too). It was an actual piece of meat, beaten flat and crumbed! Not frozen and re-fried! Amazing.
I'm not sure if it usually comes with veggies as well as mash (it was being eaten by a veggiephobe), but something green might have made it a pretty excellent meal indeed.
Note: the Carlisle does a mean chicken burger as well.
