I was expecting quite a lot from my second ever schnitzel in Adelaide. This schnitzel did live up to expectations, so you can stop worrying. I was considering ordering something else, solely based on the fact that it came with "shoestring fries"; the worst type of chip in existence...... but most of the other meals came with the same type of chip, so i really wasn't going to win either way.

The schnitzel itself was good, not a the pre-shaped-then-frozen variety pubs usually sell. As for the size.... who cares when it's a decent piece of meat? Not I! The sauce was tasty, with whole mushrooms and the salad.... well, it was a salad. All in all, thumbs up Prince Albert Hotel.

And one more thing..... a "pint" in Adelaide is the same as a "schooner" in Sydney? Laugh! Someone really needs to standardise beer glass sizes to end the confusion of the weary traveller. That is all.

A nice break from the craziness that was the Sydney Festival First Night in a pub that was quite empty. The Royal George is on that section of George St in the city that's generally best avoided, mainly due to the high concentration of nauseating and scantily clad females accompanied by polo-shirted beefed-up guys. Wank.

Anyway, so the food at the Royal George was surprisingly good. The beer selection was also good. The schnitzel? Well, it was better than your standard low-quality pub schnitzel; cooked well and presented nicely, but nothing nothing to make it stand out amongst it's competitors. The chips were very tasty indeed. All in all, not too bad for $17, but you could probably do better elsewhere.

Could it have been because the normal chef was not working on Boxing Day? I'm not sure, but this was a fairly ordinary meal.

The words "this was definitely a frozen schnitzel at some point" were heard. Very small and it's not clear how a single blob of sauce and cheese turned this schnitzel into a parmigiana, but that's what it's meant to be. Additionally, the salad left quite a lot to be desired.

Shame on you, AB hotel; your website boasts so many bold bold claims, I thought you were better than that.

All the times I've been to, and eaten at the Carlisle, and I've never had a schnitzel. Crazy! This time again it was not i that got to eat this specimen. I must say it looked pretty good (and by all reports, tasted pretty good too). It was an actual piece of meat, beaten flat and crumbed! Not frozen and re-fried! Amazing.

I'm not sure if it usually comes with veggies as well as mash (it was being eaten by a veggiephobe), but something green might have made it a pretty excellent meal indeed.

Note: the Carlisle does a mean chicken burger as well.

So I'm fairly impressed with the quality of food at my mum's new local pub (i couldn't say the same for the clientele - i don't know if it had anything to do with the Def Leppard concert up the street on the same evening). Although a bit pricey, this was quite a tasty schnitzel indeed. Not huge (it was one of the standard "heart-shaped" models) and some mashed potato would have been nice as well, but vegetables were fine and have less of a bogan flavour. I'd go back.

I'm not overly surprised that this wasn't the best schnitzel I've ever had. I just feel sad for all those Japanese people missing out on the good stuff. There was nothing wrong with the ingredients. The problem was that that the piece of chicken was so very very dry. Not even the parmigiana topping helped reduce the dryness. The chips and salad weren't too shabby though.

I do feel bad for eating in an English pub in Tokyo, with so many excellent eating venues close by.... but it's in the past now. Let's forget the whole thing.

I'd never eaten at the Gladstone Hotel before and taking into account the calibre of the clientele on a Wednesday night and the nausea-creating carpet, i didn't have high hopes. But for $10, this really wasn't too bad. You probably couldn't find a schnitzel that was any more processed, but the chips were nice-ish and the gravy was free flowing (albeit from a packet of gravox). This meal was off the $10 specials list, so for all i know their full-priced meals could be exquisite. (They also have that "cook your own steak" malarkey there as well - if that's what jiggles your jigglies).

Note: I shouldn't have a go at the Gladstone.... you'd be hard pressed to find a more decent pub in the general vicinity.

For $19-ish you'd expect a fairly excellent schnitzel. Sadly, this schnitzel was not a "stand out". It wasn't revolting by any standard, in fact it was very nice, but not $19 nice. The mash was good and actually made from potatoes, but was place underneath the schnitzel, so quite difficult to manoeuvre around the plate.

Fortunately, the rooftop at The Glenmore is quite the venue to eat such a meal. Lovely view of the opera house. A nice drop of cider. Tourist heaven.

It had been many years since i'd set foot in the Petersham Inn. Quite a nice looking pub with the art deco decor, but slightly ruined with the tacky TAB and poker machine areas. The schnitzel?.... a choice of ham or eggplant on your parmigiana was given... this specimen was the eggplant option and the topping was excellent. The schnitzel itself was a bit bland, but was easily balanced by the topping. A decent size and not over or under cooked, it was pretty decent overall; bit expensive, but... oh well.

Oh! and the roast vegetable pizza was also brilliant.

Oh lordy, this was one of the best schnitzels we've seen for quite some time. Huuuge, cooked perfectly.... and for only $12.50! Amazing. The sauce was tasty and full of mushrooms (like mushroom sauce should be) and the chips were chunky and squishy (with the odd crunchy one).

So head down to this tiny little bowling near Redhead beach for a cheap drink and the biggest meal you'll get for the price.

Off to the Hunter Valley for work-related purposes, i had this delightful schnitzel paid for out of the project budget so it was extra tasty. For a pub that is generally empty every time i drive past, this particular Tuesday night was "going off". In terms of the calibre of it's schnitzel, I must say that i was very impressed with the Harold Park Hotel. It was small but thick, not over cooked and the cheese was extra cheesey (yes, it's possible). The salad also had a decent dressing (which makes a change from the usual "lettuce and a sliver of tomato" salad you generally get elsewhere).

Brilliant.

Also.... for future reference, Monday night at this pub is a 2-for-1 meal night. Cheap food!

Spent the day at the harbor in Toronto, ended up eating at a Pumpernickel's, in the Queen's Quay food court. They had schnitzel on their menu. Ordered the dinner plate, substitute 'mash' with rice instead. Portions were fried chicken, with little or no gravy! Side includes a salad.

While not the best schnitzel (too fried, too hard, and too crunchy), it was a cheap dinner at $9.

Well... what other way would you spend your ANZAC day holiday than in a pub?.... and what is the only type of food more "ANZAC" than ANZAC biscuits? Well... i don't know, but i had a schnitzel. As you can see this is the standard "heath-shaped" schnitzelly portion. It was pretty tasty (as is everything at the trusty Botany View Hotel). The chips were thin and crispy and the salad was splendid... despite the large quantity of onion on top.

All in all... pretty nice for the price.... but next time I'm having the chicken burrito.

Quite a cute little pub. The schnitzel was cooked perfectly and was a decent bit of chicken (not a processed lump of goo). The chips were also excellent. Kinda pricey for a schnitzel, but the quality made it aaalmost worth it. Not a great number of food options at night in McLaren Vale, it seems.

Special mention to the excellent artwork, especially the painting of a frog flying through space on a lilypad staring at the earth.

Price: well... we got a deal consisting of two schnitzels and two glasses of wine for $19 (romantic, no?) but the usual price for the same schnitzel is about $18.

As a crazy schnitzel eater many people look at me in astonishment when i tell them that I've never been to Una's. For this reason, i can not compare the schnitzel in the above photo with a standard Una's model. That is, i have no idea whether this schnitzel venue has changed in name alone.

I've been told that "Una's schnitzels are massive!!!"... I wouldn't call these schnitzels "massive". They were large and cooked pretty much to perfection. The goings on with potato underneath was pretty amazing, although i can't say the same for the side plate of grated cabbage (a little hard to stomach with no sauce to assist is sliding down the oesophagus - how's that for a big word?)

All in all i was pretty happy with what we got for $19. I'd be reluctant to pay $18 each for the same meals, but the service and slightly tacky atmosphere made it a nice change of pace from the usual pub-schnitzel-eating environment.

Rating out of 10? I think it's a spot-on 7.54.

The schnitzel was juicy and cooked to perfection. The sauce was thick, tasty and packed with mushrooms, none of that 3 mushrooms in the sauce crap. The schnitzel came with chips and salad. The chips were the thick variety, pretty standard schnitzel side dish. Salad wasn't life changing. But hey it's all about the schnitzel anyway. I bought the schnitzel on a Monday so it only cost me $9. Not sure what the regular price is but I'd probably pay it. It was that good! Great schnitzel... probably a 9.28 out of 10.

Bangor Tav has recently had a renovation which has made it a popular place to eat so inside can be quite busy and noisy. I'd recommend hitting the Bangor Tav on a warm summers night to take advantage of their lovely beer garden. NOTE: The toilet signs are quite confusing. The renovations means that Bangor Tav is too trendy to simply have 'male' and 'female' signs on the door. Now they have artistic pictures of a cocktail and beer. And just because you are drinking beer doesn't mean you use the beer toilet if you are female.

Underneath a healthy serving of gravy with mushrooms, was a slice of veal. I expected the veal portion to be breaded, as with the previous schnitzel dish I've had, but apparently that wasn't the case with the Jager Schnitzel.

On each end of the veal were two bread dumplings. These were very thick and condense and was a bit of a struggle for me to eat. Lost on the war on the second dumpling.

Although the price was a bit steep, I can guarantee you that you won't be hungry after eating this dish - in fact, it will fill you before the meal's done.

Well... a fairly horrid schnitzel by any standards. Might have been acceptable if it was priced at about $4. Thin and tasteless and small.

Paddintgon RSL has a crap atmosphere, angry locals and over-priced beers for an RSL. Not to mention the very weird food ordering procedure: pay at the bar, take the receipt to the bistro and line-up to hand over your receipt THEN wait about 20 minutes for them to deep fry a cheap piece of crumbed meat.

All in all.... a very energy intensive evening. Lazy people beware.

So.... really.... for $25 I was really quite unimpressed with this meal. Small and kinda tasteless. The mystery sauce was quite nice, but the potato salad didn't rate, in my books.
The venue was big and loud and the service was kinda shite. Not to mention having to endure various hens night (although i was impressed by the group of girls that instead of helping their friend off the floor took photos of her when she fell backwards off her chair).

A touch on the small side.... but what can you expect for a bogan haven that sells $3 vodkas.

It was a cold winters day in Bonn and reaching that time when one begins craving a quality schnitzel. I ducked into a cozy looking bistro, found a seat in the non-smoking section and perused the menu. I made my selection, wienerschintzel and a glass of Kölsch.

I was happy with the serving size I certainly was satisfied. When Heading to Bonn, I strongly recommend this schnitzel. Especially with a few glasses of Kölsch.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was actually March the 26th 2010. The glare from my LCD monitor and Excel spreadsheet started playing tricks on my consciousness. Threes turned to eights, sixes nines, and a stubborn V lookup function refused to cooperate. A bumbling co-worker stumbled upon this Schnitzel safari website when I decided it was time to road test the local cuisine. Our work being located in Auburn NSW didn’t present many Schnitzel opportunities. The area better know for its drive by shootings rather than its crumbed poultry, however a short two-minute drive down the road and I found myself ordering a $12.50 Schnitzel and chips from Auburn (Rosnay) Public Golf Course.

After a short 5 minutes passed I was served up a relatively good-sized Schnitzel with chips and some side salad. The salad appeared to be token and probably included for aesthetics rather than any nutritional value.. As mentioned the Schnitzel was a modest size (can’t compete with Cockatoo Hotel, Petersham. See review.) and the gravy that clung to the schnitzel was a mandatory worthwhile addition. The chicken itself was quite thin and free from the sometime thick rubbery cuts you get at pubs and clubs. If in Auburn and looking for a cheap schnitie, definitely give it a go!

Not the best schnitzel i've had, not the worst. Pretty tasteless and came with a piece of mystery string. Not a fan of thin chips and the salad only consisted of lettuce and 10 bits of shredded carrot. Nice view though, especially of the people bolting off the beach as a delightful storm rolls in.

I jest (ha ha!) it didn't cost $75 to purchase this fine specimen, but there was a bit of misleading advertising with the "Thursday Night - $9", neglecting to mention (or possibly in very small letters "plus extra for sauce and salad". It doesn't matter though. The mission was for schnitzel and at about $13 it was still reasonable.

The schnitzel itself was excellent. If there's any reason to head to Adelaide, it's for schnitzel. Proper piece of chicken, cooked just perfectly. Fresh salad and tasty sauce.

The schnitzel itself was quite nice. One step above the bog-standard schnitzels you usually get on a pubs cheap meal list. The sauce was runny and bubbly (?) and the mash was only one step better than that fake mash often serve on $5 menus.

They also had parmigiana on their menu, but it was an extra $8 (which seemed a little silly to me - that is, how can they justify charging $8 for extra cheese and tomato sauce?)

We unexpected dropped by this German family-owned restaurant in the middle of nowhere city of Stillwater, Minnesota, called Gasthaus Barvarian Hunter, from a long day hike (so apology for no photographic evidence, but here is a drawing). They serve traditional dishes, such as schnitzels and bratwurst, as well as imported German beer on tap (I had a half pint of Spaten Light beer, which was a refreshing sweet Summer beer).

I had the Jagerschnitzel, which was one of their special. It came in two large breaded patties in a mushroom sauce with potato dumplings (it's softer than it looks) and red cabbage (yuck). The schnitzel was a little dry and was actually thicker than I expected. In fact, finishing up the first patty was easy, but working on the second was harder than I thought. The meal was rich and dense and very filling (such a wimp, but I did not finish the second patty entirely).

It was a good, filling meal, but for about $20, it's not for the budget conscious... but it's definitely worth eating once in a while.

Hey - we had dinner at 'Franks' on Saturday night and these are what emerged from the kitchen if you ordered a schnitzel. Service was very scary and the place is obviously a front for mafia money laundering. Apparently though the schnitzels were tasty and massive - no sides needed here! (Pizza on the other hand was something else... ).

The schnitzels were good.
Decent quality chicken, not too large (large schnitzels generally make me nervous)
and the crust was excellent - reminiscent of a Japanese 'Panko' coating according to Peter.
The gravy was very nice too.
Only complaint was the serving of the chips - 11 small chips hidden and steaming under the schnitzel.
I know its only $10, but the chips cannot be the most expensive part of this dish, surely?
Peter correctly remarked that he would much rather pay $12 for the same schnitzel...
with a decent pile of chips.

Taken at a korean restaurant in hangzhou (China) on xixi rd just outside the back gate of zhejiang uni. unfortunately we had butchered the schnitzel before even thinking of snapping a pic. note that we had at $20 handy! must get brownie points for that. sauce was sweet...still tasted good.

What better way to spend a Saturday night then to form a large posse and head down to the White Cockatoo (after spending the day having a few drinkies and playing frisbee in the park).

Anyway... to cut a long story short, there were a few people who had grown tired of hearing about the scary size of the schnitzels served at the White Cockatoo and decided to make the trek down from Newcastle to Sydney to try one out.

I don't know. Even I'm astonished at how they can make something so big from a chicken AND how they make enough money to carry on serving such huge meals. Even being a Saturday, when you would expect a pub would be doing most of it's business, there weren't many people in the pub and by 10pm we were the only people there.

This place is really not suitable for vegetarians. Macedonian food.... very meaty and potatoey. Also, the restaurant is very dark.... possibly so you don't realise that distinct lack of vegetables.

Anyway, what we have hear was what was called "natural schnitzel" on the menu... there was a Macedonian word for it, which I can't remember.

Pretty awesome tasting though. It was basically flattened and grilled pieces of pork. Nice and tender with a tasty smoked flavour.

I do recommend this place as far as cute little bizarre restaurants go, but make sure you only eat salad for the day before and after.

Review: well... this is one of the worst actual schnitzels I've eaten in a while. I'll give them points for an innovative presentation (cut up and formed into a stack with the salad), but the actual piece of schnitzel itself was burnt and the crumbs weren't sticking to the meat.

Also, I only had a $10 note. But that's OK, because it wasn't even nearly half a good as most of the other schnitzels featured here.

This is great, they have $5 meals at the gateway hotel (g-club) now .. one of them being a schnitzel. The best bit is there are no catches, you dont have to get a drink with it and they didn't even charge me extra for gravy!

So this is what you get for $5 .. salad, chips, chicken schnitzel and your choice of sauce .. my friend got mayo. They arn't huge but not bad for 5 bux.

The chicken schnitzel with a side of mash and mushroom gravy was chosen as the lunch special. I and a fellow person both had this choice and comparison of our respective photos (only one posted so far) indicates the presentation of mine (see photo) was far more prettier. I thought it odd that there was several layers of mini-sized schnitzels piled on top of the mash (very interesting look), but I think after consuming the lot, I think the smaller pieces make you feel fuller by the end of it, and less cutting involved. Above average tasting schnitzel, just enough gravy, which was yummy. Mash was too creamy for my taste. I give it 3 stars out of 5.

Review: This actually wasn't my meal, so i can't tell you how good it was. Although, what I did eat, which was the Zigeuner Schnitzel (Gypsey Schnitzel = Not crumbed, topped with a spicy paprika, capsicum & onion sauce. Served with sauteed potatoes), was pretty awesome. It was the same size as the specimen pictured, was a good quality piece of meat and was a nice change from your usual crumbed schnitzel. Of course, not as big as they come, but as the waiter pointed out.... it's not the size that matters.

Review: Very tasty, the snito's of the Exchange have been calling me back for over 2 years now, recently the size of them has reduced somewhat but as you can see they are still a very healthy portion! Definitely worth a crack.

...WOW.

This was a great schnitty, not often do I go for the Parmigiana option, however in this case, its was pretty damn good. Chicken was thick and suculant. Anyone in the Adelaide area, I highly recommend dropping in and having a go at one of these. Very good size too. Delicious!

It was a nice change to not have chips with the schnitzel but the schnitzel itself could have been a little better. I was slightly hungover on this occasion, so the oiliness really hit the spot. However, John seemed to think this was quite a special schnitzel (he's not been to the White Cockatoo though).

The schnitty was slightly small, so initial glance was not so favourable. However, the flavour and texture was excellent! Chips were good and the mushrooms were chunky and not over cooked like often are.

Certainly one of the best schnitties I've had in a while, could have been bigger, but smaller is better for my waist line...

This was possibly the worst schnitzel I've had. I will say, in their defence, that they were being mass produced for this occasion because the chicken inside was uber-processed and the coating was more of a batter than a crumb.
The mash was fairly good though and I did get to play a small cowbell.

I must admit, the point of eating this meal was more to make sure that the extreme volumes of beer weren't going down onto an empty stomach (an action that my body appreciated greatly the next day).

You can't really go wrong with something that's $5 (unless you're eating dinner at the Landsdowne)... yeah, i figured that even if I ate 3 mouthfuls I'd still be fine with the amount I spent.

Not worth anymore than $5 though, but if i was strapped for cash, this is where i'd head.

(Sorry about the shite photo, it was at this moment that i realised that my camera in my phone had no flash - and the lighting was turned down in the pub so you couldnt tell that those steaks you were eating were actually made from compressed dog food (possibly))

Another trip to the White Cockatoo

Ah, these specimens were seen on a Campbell family jaunt to the White Cockatoo (where they also won the trivia night and won a handsome $40 voucher for the bottle shop).
A loverly time was had by all and schnitzel was eat for lunch for the rest of the week.
I can't even look at these schnitzels without feeling slightly ill.

Basically, I have to advice you to check this place out if you haven't already.
And make sure to own up if you have to have a post-schnitzel spew.

Well.... apart from the vegetables being boiled beyond recognition (as the usual case in club bistros) the schnitzel wasn't bad.... and again, you can't go wrong with $3 schooners.

Just one thing... i wouldn't advise that you try the Sunday roast at this place. I've never eaten anything worse.

My Zia Vincenza made these. They're great. Obviously real chicken, and
heaps of parmesan and parsley in the crumb.

They cost me $0, but they probably cost her more than that.

The thing I actually liked more was the two-for-one cocktails downstairs from 5-7pm..... not crappy cocktails either! But i must say, the bouncer ther was a complete knobhead (although, i reckon you'd be pretty hard pressed to find a bouncer who isn't one)

This Schnitty was consumed by my friend on this occasion, rarely do I myself go for a veal schnitty, however I am led to believe that this was quite a good schnitty. The Chips were reported to be a bit "funny" tasting - possibly used old oil to fry them - unsure, but not that great flavour. Gravy was gravy, and well salad was freshish.

PS - no $20 note on hand on this occasion...

Decent bit of chicken, but that's where the pleasantness ends at this pub. After we seemed to have angered the Irish food ordering lady for no good reason, we were too scared to ask for anything extra with our meals. Hence, no gravy and no extra bacon on the irish breakfast.

Anyway, not overly impressed at all.

The schnitzel, for the price, was crap (although others seemed to enjoy it more). But the chips were amazing (but i am easily pleased). Really... you dont really expect quality from RSL food, but this wasn't too bad.
